Upcoming events:
Tsuji Kazumi

Mjölk is proud to present the first Canadian solo exhibition for Kanazawa based
glass artist Kazumi Tsuji (Factory Zoomer).
The exhibition will feature Kazumi Tsuji’s modern interpretation of Kiriko glasses,
which is titled “Men-choco”. This is the Japanese technique of layering paper thin
coloured glass over a clear glass base which allows the artist to cut patterns into the
coloured surface to reveal the clear contrast underneath.
Kazumi Tsuji’s interpretation uses a black/purple outer layer, which she cuts or
polishes away, leaving a soft matte texture. A combination of bowls, plates and
glasses will be available to purchase.
We will also present a limited series called “Re-claimed blue” which is the result
of re- cycling broken or defective glasses from her studio. The combination of
clear glass and black/purple glasses from her “Men-choco” collection resulted
in a stunning blue colour.
A surprise that revealed recycled glass could be even more beautiful than their
originals.
Please join us for our opening reception May 30th from 7:00 - 10:00pm
Kazumi Tsuji will be in attendance at the exhibition.

Two Year Anniversary!
December 15, 2011
We can’t believe it’s been two years already, can you? So much so that yesterday was technically our anniversary. Oh well! One of these years we’re going to have to have a big party in January. Until then…come on by, do some Christmas shopping and grab a cookie [Moomin cookies made by Lindsey Bakes]!
THANK YOU to all the amazing people who come into our shop every day, who enjoy our space and our products in person.
THANK YOU to all the new customers we have met online, through our webshop which we launched in July. You guys have cleaned us out of almost all of our stock and there is still one week left until Christmas!
THANK YOU to all of the writers, editors, stylists and bloggers who have talked and tweeted about us all year long. We appreciate your ongoing interest in our lives and our shop.
THANK YOU to our incredible designers: without your talent, skill and vision we would not be able to curate such a beautiful shop. You are the heart of it all.
THANK YOU for an amazing second year!!!
OMFFG (Only at Mjölk: Fredericia Furniture Goodness)
November 9, 2011

On Thursday we celebrated the opening of the Fredericia furniture showroom at Mjölk. This has marked a new chapter in the evolution of the store, we’ve gone from carrying a range of different furniture collections to focusing on a few key collections. A big reason for us to open the store in the first place is because of Fredericia, and not being able to see their collection locally.
Now we have worked together to launch the official Fredericia showroom in Toronto, which we are thrilled about. Thomas and his wonderful wife Henrietta flew in from Denmark to come for the event, and Elizaveta came from a trip around the world.
We were so happy to see a lot of familar friends, designers, architects, and customers all in one place. The night had a wonderful positive energy as people enjoyed the catering from Parts and Labour, good conversation, and (in our opinions) the most beautiful furniture on earth.

HOI BO + Mjolk: A perspective in travel
October 21, 2011

The bag born from the collaboration between HOI BO + Mjolk strongly reflects the shared belief of a perfect balance of form and function. Sarra Tang had been working on a gender neutral collection for some time and the collaboration was the perfect situation to commit to developing a concept for both men and woman. “I wanted to create an elegant but informal aesthetic that was expressed through a balance in design. Not one that made the genders seemingly genderless but a piece that complemented both genders in different ways.” says Tang.
Please come to the store for our opening party on Oct 21st from 7:00 - 11:00pm. Read all about it here and here.
SS Mjolk Pylsur
August 2011
Mjölk is recreating Reykjavik’s “Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur” in front of their shop–with a cheeky nod to their logo. Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur means “The best hotdog in town” and after 60 years in business they have become arguably the most famous hot dog stand in the world. We will be cooking the hot dogs just like at Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur, steam cooking them in LAVA beer (courtesy of Fitumi Trading Co., who imports Icelandic Beer which you can buy at the LCBO), and importing all of the authentic toppings including a special Icelandic mustard, remoulade mayonnaise, ketchup, and frizzled onions directly from Iceland.
Come join us on Friday, August 5th, from 7-11pm, or until the dogs are all gone.

One Year Anniversary!
December 15, 2010

It was 1 year today that we opened our doors for the first time.
To mark the 1 year anniversary we had our friend Lindsey –Lindsey Bakes– to bake us a collection of Moomin cookies, she did an amazing job, and they are just as tasty as they look. We’ll be giving them out for free all day (while we have them) so please stop by if you’re in the neighborhood.
A year after opening, the symbolism of milk is just as strong. Our focus for our future is about nurturing. Providing a gallery space for new limited production design by emerging designers from Scandinavia and Japan, nurturing their creativity as they grow together with our store. We have some exciting new products that we can’t wait to share!
Melinda Josie - 'Dalahast' at Mjolk
November 2010

You may remember this painting we bought awhile back by artist Melinda Josie. Well, we are pleased to tell you that we have a special little exhibition of new artworks in Melinda Josie’s C series (or what has become a series!).
Now hanging at mjölk are the following gorgeous intricately hand painted pieces. It took all our strength to not scoop them all up (just one for our “permanent collection”)!

Contact 2010
May 2010

Saturday was the Junction’s opening party for the contact photo festival. There were dozens of little impromptu galleries on our street and we were excited to be one of them. Especially considering we were showing a wonderful series by Per Kristiansen. Visit us at mjölk during the month of May to see Per Kristiansen’s photographic series, Untitled.
There is something beyond an edifying pleasure in the act of comparing, in the impulse to investigate and catalog the infinite ways any one thing can appear, its ‘mood’; its ‘feel’; as cast in the Mandelbrodian algorithms of nature. To really look closely at something, as a fly on the wall of the ceaseless changes that happen with or without our hand, is the search, however delusive, for its true form.
